Quality Index FAQ

  1. Is quality index reported at the keyword level?

No. Only ads have quality index (called quality score in the API). There are two quality indices - one for Sponsored Search and one for Content Match.

  2. What happens to quality index when you add a new keyword to the ad group?

Nothing immediately. If that new keyword has an impact on the overall performance of an ad, then quality index will change for the ads in the ad group.

  3. What happens to quality index when you add a new ad to the ad group?

When an ad is first added, quality index will be null (undefined).

  4. What happens to quality index when you edit an existing ad in an ad group?

Initially nothing. If the change to the ad results in different performance, the quality index will change.

  5. If a keyword is assigned a custom URL will the quality index of the keyword's ad group still affect where the keyword is served in production?

Custom URLs at the keyword level have nothing to do with quality index. They simply allow an advertiser to have more control over where clicks are directed within the same ad group
